Fortnite has today launched an event celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. In just a few days time it will be the anniversary of Dr King’s iconic I Have A Dream Speech. The speech was delivered to over 250,000 people from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC on August 28 1963.
Dr King’s powerful words are one of the most iconic speeches in history and marked a defining moment for the civil rights moment.
The following year the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed, with the Voting Rights Act of 1965 – another world changing moment Dr King held protests for – passed afterwards.
And in the run-up to the anniversary of Dr King’s famous I Have A Dream Speech Fortnite is holding a celebration of the iconic civil rights leader.
March Through Time is available in Fortnite Creative and immerses players into that pivotal moment in time.
Author: Martin Luther is 'most important figure in history'
Fortnite players are able to explore a reimagined version of DC in 1963, listen to the speech and visit a museum which educates people about the civil rights movement.
In a post online, the Fortnite team said: “Celebrate the life and work of Nobel Peace Prize recipient Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in a new interactive experience presented by TIME Studios. Developed by members of the community in Fortnite Creative, March Through Time immerses players in the entirety of Dr. King’s monumental ‘I Have A Dream’ speech and the history surrounding it.”
There will also be collaborative quests and an unlockable DC 63 spray that is available as part of the Fortnite MLK event.
March Through Time was built by members of the Fortnite Creative community ChaseJackman, GQuanoe, XWDFr, and YU7A.
You can step into this immersive experience with island code 3815-8892-143, or look for the March Through Time tile in the Discover Menu.
Epic Games added: “The experience extends with museum-inspired points of interest, and collaborative mini-game quests you complete with others. These activities progress players through the experience and bring to life important themes of Dr. King’s speech: we move forward when we work together.
“Completing the challenges related to Dr. King and the Civil Rights movement will unlock a D.C. 63 spray for your Locker.”
This isn’t the first time that Epic Games has held an educational experience in Fortnite.
Last year Epic Games held the We The People event in Fortnite – which focused on conversations about race in America.
This came in the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd, which sparked protests around the world led by the Black Lives Matter movement and led to conversations – tragically – once again about police brutality against African Americans in the US.
