Free Guy, A Movie Where Ryan Reynolds Realizes He’s Living In An Open-World Game, Delayed To May

Free Guy, a new film starring Ryan Reynolds as a bank teller who realizes he’s living in the open world video game Free City, has been delayed until May 21. The sci-fi comedy, which was initially scheduled to be released in the US on July 3, 2020, was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The cast includes Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer, Stranger Things’ Joe Keery, and Jojo Rabbit’s Taika Waititi. Written by Scoob! screenwriter Matt Lieberman and Zak Penn, a Marvel veteran whose credits include The Avengers and Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One, Free Guy is directed by Shawn Levy, who has recently served as an executive producer and director on Stranger Things.

Free Guy’s official synopsis reads: “In the open world video game ‘Free City,’ an amalgamation of Grand Theft Auto and Fortnite, Guy (Reynolds) is a non-player character (NPC) working as a bank teller. Thanks to a code developed by programmers Milly (Comer) and Keys (Keery) inserted into Free City by the publisher Antoine (Waititi), Guy becomes aware of his world being a video game, and takes steps to make himself the hero, creating a race against time to save the game before the developers can shut it down.”

Reynolds, best known for his role in the two Deadpool films, will also star as “the world’s greatest con man,” in the upcoming Netflix thriller Red Notice, alongside Dwayne Johnson and Gal Gadot, which is set to debut on the streaming giant later this year. In January 2021, Marvel Studios chairman Kevin Feige also confirmed that the sequel to Deadpool 2 was in the works. Filming is likely to begin in late 2022.

Free Guy also features cameo appearances from YouTube personalities Jacksepticeye, Ninja, Pokimane, and LazarBeam, as well as the late Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek. Reynolds, who starred in 2019’s Detective Pikachu, is no stranger to video games, having voiced the Green Lantern in 2011’s Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters and Deadpool in 2018’s Marvel Strike Force.
