Gamescom 2020 Is Officially Canceled, Officials Moving Forward With Digital Plans

A few weeks back, gamescom officials made the announcement that a digital event would be happening to supplement the lack of a physical one. With the coronavirus pandemic still an ongoing problem, no one was sure if a social gathering would be possible. With the German government now banning all major events nationwide, it’s pretty clear that gamescom will not be happening.

In a post on Twitter, officials stated that plans for gamescom 2020 have been shuttered. The digital event is still a go, but there obviously cannot be any physical presence this year. The German ban runs until August 31, 2020, which is just after when gamescom would have concluded.

If you happened to have tickets to attend gamescom, the organizers will be providing refunds. Devs affected will also be getting their money back. It’s a very sad state of affairs, but there really is nothing else that can be done. It is better to be safe than sorry during this crazy time.

There’s no timeframe for when the digital event will be happening, but gamescom officials will keep everyone posted. Considering it was set to coincide with the physical event, it seems likely we’ll be seeing some streams in late August.
