The 2018 reboot of God Of War is to become the third major Sony exclusive to be ported to PC, with 4K support and an unlocked frame rate.
As many predicted, God Of War is to be the next first party PlayStation exclusive to be released on PC, with the new version of the game set to launch on January 14, 2022.
As with Horizon Zero Dawn and Days Gone there’s not expected to be any new content, although there are some rare digital extras included, namely: Death’s Vow Armor Sets for Kratos and Atreus, Exile’s Guardian Shield Skin, Buckler of the Forge Shield Skin, Shining Elven Soul Shield Skin, and Dökkenshieldr Shield Skin.
More importantly, the game will support 4K resolutions, an unlocked frame rate, and 21:9 ultra-widescreen monitor support.
The PlayStation Blog goes into further detail about the graphical upgrades, which include higher resolution shadows, improved screen space reflections, and ‘enhancements to the ambient occlusion pipeline with GTAO and SSDO’ – which we hope isn’t rude because we have no idea what it means.
More comprehensible is support for Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) tech on RTX, which helps to get higher resolutions without needing more power.
Nvidia’s Reflex low latency tech will also be used for more responsive controls, which will support both joypads and keyboard and mouse.
The blog also mentions that God Of War on PlayStation 4 has already sold 19.5 million copies worldwide, so the PC version is obviously going to add to that total.
Sequel Ragnarök is due to be released next year on PlayStation 4 and 5, but it will probably be several years until it appears on PC.
Although Sony has never explained its PC strategy in detail, comments from former PlayStation America boss Shawn Layden suggest that the plan, at least while he was there, was only ever to port over games that were several years old – so as to ensure there was still an incentive to buy a PlayStation console.
