GTA 5 on PS5 & Xbox Series X has 4K and ray-tracing at 60fps – still no trailer

Rockstar Games has finally shared some new details for the next gen versions of GTA 5 a couple of weeks before launch.

Worryingly little information has been shared on the next gen releases of Grand Theft Auto 5 and Grand Theft Auto Online since they were announced in 2020. But while there is still no new trailer yet, Rockstar Games has gone into more detail regarding the upgraded visuals.

Alongside some new screenshots, Rockstar says that both games will boast high-end PC visuals on consoles with three separate graphics modes to choose from. The first, Fidelity Mode, aims for the highest visual quality while targeting 30 frames per second. It also supports 4K resolution with ray-tracing enabled.

For those who prefer smoother gameplay to more detailed visuals, Performance Mode does the opposite, targeting 60 frames per second. However, there is a Performance RT mode that acts as a hybrid of the first two, supporting 4K resolution and ray-tracing while still reaching 60fps. However, this will only be for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, so not the Xbox Series S.

Other technical improvements include faster loading times, improved lighting quality across shadows, and water reflections. Rockstar also reconfirms haptic feedback for the PlayStation 5 version of the game, with the DualSense’s adaptive triggers to provide dynamic resistance. No specific examples were given but the triggers will presumably be used for gunplay and driving.

You will be able to transfer your Grand Theft Auto 5 and Grand Theft Auto Online progress over to the new versions so you don’t have to start over. Although, with Grand Theft Auto Online to become a standalone purchase for the first time ever, Rockstar has included a couple of things to welcome in new players.

Aside from the online game being completely free for the first three months (on PlayStation 5 at least), it will include a new Career Builder feature that gives you $4,000,000 to spend on essentials, like weapons and vehicles, to help get you started. Rockstar says this will also work for current players looking to reset their character and make a fresh start.

There will also be a bevy of quality-of-life improvements, such as a new tutorial and a new main menu that lets you easily jump between races, heists, and other modes. There’s strangely no mention of these improvements coming to the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC versions of Grand Theft Auto Online.

While it’s good to finally have some information on these versions, Rockstar is cutting it a bit fine, with the games releasing on March 15, at least digitally. It turns out physical copies won’t be available until April.

So far, the next gen versions of these two games haven’t been received too well by fans for a number of reasons, with the September trailer being overwhelmingly disliked on YouTube.

Rockstar’s reputation has also taken a hit thanks to the incredibly buggy launch of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition.

Time will tell if the new version of Grand Theft Auto 5 will change that but no trailer and a delayed physical launch is exactly how the remaster trilogy started off, so that’s not a good omen.
