Half-Life: Alyx has made a huge splash since it came out a few weeks ago. Valve has crafted a game that is a significant leap forward for VR games, thanks in part to its in-house Valve Index VR system.
The gun selection for the game is limited, but there are still some unique upgrades available for each weapon. You get these upgrades by using the Combine Fabricator and spending resin, which you find while exploring in the game. Here is a quick rundown of everything you need to know to maximize your load-out.
Pistol
The first weapon you get in the game, the pistol, is an excellent intro to the gunplay in Half-Life: Alyx. Players will have to rack a round into the chamber to fire, as well as eject and insert magazines to reload. The pistol also has a handy display on the grip to show how many rounds are left.
There are four upgrades for the pistol.
We recommend getting either the reflex sight or the laser sight first. The reflex sight has the benefit of showing weak points, which will help you conserve ammo by being tactical. The laser sight, though, shows precisely where your shots will land. Which you get depends on what you prefer and how good of a shot you are.
SMG
The SMG is the closest you will get to a machine gun in Half-Life: Alyx since every gun in the game is one-handed. The SMG comes with 30 rounds and uses power cells. Unlike the pistol and shotgun, the SMG only has three upgrades.
Like the pistol before it, you will want the reflex sight or the laser sight first and foremost. More ammo is nice, but it isn’t effective if you can’t aim properly.
Shotgun
Like every other video game in existence, the shotgun is designed to make things dead very, very quickly. Shells for the shotgun are a bit harder to come by, but each blast from the shotgun goes a lot further. So it’s a tradeoff.
The shotgun initially holds six shells, plus one in the chamber makes a total of seven.
The laser sight might be useful, but the shotgun has a pretty large hit radius. We definitely recommend saving up for the grenade launcher because it is the best upgrade in the game.
There are plenty of things you need to know before playing Half-Life: Alyx, but this weapon guide should give you a decent insight to dive right in. There are plenty of new and exciting things on display in Half-Life: Alyx. And, if Valve is to be believed, it’s the first entry in a whole new generation of Half-Life titles.
