Hitman 3’s New Pirate Map Has A Monkey Island Reference

Hitman 3’s Ambrose Island DLC launched last week bringing a pirate-themed adventure to the World of Assassination. The titular island is located just west of Thailand in the Andaman Sea and tasks Agent 47 with eliminating the leaders of a militia and pirate syndicate. Because the map is mostly exteriors, it can be tricky to navigate, especially without Mission Stories to help direct players.

However, wandering agents won’t have to go far to find a strange gravestone tucked into a rocky corner near the start of the mission. Head down from the Western Beach and peer into a shadowy nook. There will be a gravestone with "G Threepwood, Mighty Pirate" engraved on it. This name is, of course, a reference to Guybrush Threepwood, protagonist of the Monkey Island series of point-and-click adventure games.

There’s more to this easter egg as reported by Eurogamer. Light four braziers across Ambrose Island and there to unlock a treasure chest that’s buried underneath Threepwood’s grave. The first brazier is near the gravestone, but the rest are scattered across the island. For directions, follow Andy and Jane from Outside Xbox in the video below.

Once you’ve lit all the braziers using a torch, return to Threepwood’s grave with a shovel to dig up some buried treasure.

Speaking of Monkey Island, we recently got a peek at Return To Monkey Island’s dialog system in a new clip posted by franchise creator Ron Gilbert. The clip shows a conversation between Judge Plank, who appears to be presiding over an empty courthouse, and Guybrush Threepwood (while he was still alive, since we now know he later dies on Ambrose Island). Plank doesn’t seek too pleased with Threepwood admitting to being a mighty pirate, but the clip ends before he hands down his sentence.

Return to Monkey Island is due out later this year, with Gilbert hinting more clips will come as we near the game’s release date.
