An eagle-eyed Splatoon fan has spotted that one of Jelfonzo's shirts reads "fuck you" in Splatoon's language.
Considering its kid-friendly style and the fact that it's published by Nintendo, you might be surprised to learn that Splatoon has some pretty dark lore. Beyond some of the more obvious themes about segregation between Inklings and Octolings, Splatoon also takes place in a world where we've all died long ago and features cloned cats that want to stab their creator in the back. You can now add swear words to that list.
As spotted by Twitter user rassicas, Splatoon 2's shirt-shop owner Jelfonzo will wear a shirt on Tuesdays that shows a pair of lips and some unreadable text in the Inkling's language, which is made even harder to read thanks to the low quality texture. However, thanks to Tumblr user jacebeleren, who managed to figure out the alphabet of the language in Splatoon thanks to taking a look at several in-game posters, as well as a high-quality rip of the shirt texture that makes it more readable, the words on the shirt can be translated to say "fuck you".
There's almost no way that this shirt was designed to say "fuck" accidentally and was likely left in the game by a developer who thought that fans would never be able to figure out the language used in Splatoon, let alone going through the seven different outfits that Jelfonzo swaps between in order to read what it says on his shirt. Guess they shouldn't have put up all of those posters with actual words in, then.
Although it's definitely surprising to see "fuck" in a Nintendo game, it probably shouldn't come as too much of a surprise to see Jelfonzo wearing a shirt that insults the player. As pointed out by MK_Squid on Twitter, an image of Zelfonzo within the Splatoon 2 art book shows that he was once supposed to wear a shirt called the "Round 'You Suck' Shirt", which apparently just evolved into something much more obscene.
