This week, pop artist King Princess released their second studio album, “Hold On Baby”. While promoting the album, the singer/songwriter revealed that the album’s first track was originally titled 'PS5' but had to be changed. The reason for that change? Sony thought it didn’t focus on the console enough.
In a recent episode of the Zane Lowe Interviews podcast, King Princess shared a bit about what went into crafting their new album. Naturally, this led to the reveal that the first track on the album, “I Hate Myself I Want To Party” was actually called “PS5”. When prodded on the reason for the name change, they said, “I had to change it because it was called ‘PS5’ and Miss PlayStation herself said ‘please no.’”
In further clarification, the singer elaborated that Sony told them that “the song is not enough about the PlayStation 5” to justify such a title. Honestly, that seems fair considering that the console is only mentioned once within the chorus of the song. Perhaps if they had commented on the haptic feedback of the DualSense controller or the Auto Low Latency Mode of the PS5, it would have been okay.
However, a look at the album’s description on Apple Music (thanks GamesRadar) reveals why King Princess chose “PS5” as a title in the first place. The song was inspired by a time in King Princess’ life when they were staying in their childhood home with their girlfriend and best friend. They filled their days playing PS5 all the time. It seems the title was more symbolic than a literal shout-out to the console.
Let this be a lesson to all aspiring singer/songwriters out there; If you want to name a song after a console, at least mention some of its features.
