Kingdom Hearts Missing Link Beta Test Starts Next Month

Kingdom Hearts Missing Link is slowly making its way to us. Revealed at the 20th-anniversary event back in April, Square Enix said that there’d be a closed beta test before the end of the year. However, game director Tetsuya Nomura apologized for an "unforeseen situation" that caused the beta to be delayed into 2023. Today, Nomura makes good by revealing the start of a "prototype test" that will begin in the middle of January.

The test is limited to Japanese players only, with signups running from today until December 26. Only 1,000 applicants will be selected, and every applicant must have an iPhone 8 Plus running on iOS 11 or better. Missing Link will eventually come to Android, but the game is first being tested on iPhone. The test will begin on January 13.

Don’t expect much from this prototype test. As Nomura explained on Twitter, the "test verifies only limited functions on a small scale instead of the usual CBT (closed beta test)." Expect more details on the closed beta test to arrive soon after the prototype test.

There is at least one thing to get excited about. New key art was posted on the official Missing Link website that offers a new tantalizing look at the upcoming mobile title. Unlike the trailer, the key art shows us quite a few characters that appear to have the same style of Victorian-era clothing but are distinctly different from the protagonist revealed earlier. This could possibly hint at Missing Link being some sort of MMO where players get to create their own personal Keybearers and potentially even their own Keyblades.

We’ll have to wait and see how the prototype test shakes out to make that determination. In the meantime, Kingdom Hearts players are still embroiled in a heated debate over perhaps the most important mystery in the series: what button should be assigned to Cure. Players seem divided on X, A, or Triangle, depending on the platform you play Kingdom Hearts on. This debate will surely be reignited as soon as Missing Link arrives with its mobile touch controls.
