Lego Super Mario Pre-Order Guide: Lego NES, Starter Course, Expansions, And More

The release of Lego Super Mario, the highly anticipated and first collaboration between Nintendo and Lego, has finally arrived. So far, Lego has gradually released new details about the set, but now the floodgates have opened and the sets became available on August 1. In addition to the required Starter Course, Lego Super Mario has 10 expansions, and there’s even a Lego Nintendo Entertainment System, which interacts with the Mario figure.

Each of the 10 expansions is designed for use alongside the $60 Starter Course, so you need to grab that before considering any of the expansions. While the Starter Course includes Mario himself, each of the themed expansions includes other characters, both friends and foes, such as Yoshi, Toad, Bowser, King Boo, and more. They also come with their own builds based on worlds and fixtures from the video game franchise.

The Lego NES kit is by far the priciest and biggest of the Nintendo-themed Lego sets. Created to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the console’s launch, the 2,646-piece set is $230 and also releases August 1. The kit comes with multiple builds, including a tiny NES, controller, Super Mario Bros. game cart, and CRT TV. Once the TV is built, you can turn a crank to watch Mario hop through World 1-1 of the plumber’s first adventure. Lego Mario can be placed on top of the CRT TV to make noises that correspond with the action on-screen as the crank turns.

Additionally, Lego has revealed 10 character packs, which will be sold in blind bags for $5 each. The characters featured in the packs include common enemies such as Blooper, Bullet Bill, Bob-omb, Eep Cheep, Blooper, and more. On top of that, you can buy character power-up packs that change Mario’s look.

There will also be a free Lego Super Mario app that will log coin collection and other metrics while playing and assist you in the building process, providing step-by-step instructions and tips for tweaking your builds. The app will serve as a forum where players can share their progress and ideas with family and friends, too.

You can check out every set in the Lego Super Mario lineup below. Listings for every expansion and the Lego NES are live at the Lego Store. They went on sale Saturday, August 1.
