Though Final Fantasy 13 turned out to be a controversial entry in Square Enix's long-running series, the game's sequels took the template established by the original and spun it in newer, more interesting directions, bringing an experimental flair to a franchise that can often feel stuck in its ways. Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13, the third and final entry in the trilogy, caps off this evolution with an evolved battle system, a time-jumping story reminiscent of The Legend Of Zelda: Majora's Mask, and several new ways to power up Lightning, the game's pink-haired protagonist.
One of these ways is through the use of garbs. Kind of like Final Fantasy 10-2's Dressphere system, garbs allow you to change Lightning's combat abilities by switching around her outfits. But if you're trying for a specific build, which are the best garbs you can find? We take a look.
8 L'automne
L'automne is one of the best-looking garbs in the game, which is reason enough to put it on this list. But lest you think we are just shallow, it's also useful! You can find this garb at Expert Outfitters in the Wildlands on the eighth day.
It has two locked spells – the powerful Thundara and Aerora – but its real value comes from its innate ability, which restores your ATB whenever you stagger an enemy. Given that it already comes with a higher ATB cap, this means that you're able to stagger enemies overall much more easily, tipping the scales in your favor.
7 Sand Fox
The Sand Fox garb, found at Bandits' Best Outfitters in Dead Dunes, has a strategic edge that sets it apart from the other garbs in the game. Though it comes with two locked spells, meaning that it has less room for customization than some of the game's other outfits, those two locked spells are Deprotega and Deshellga level three, which allows you to strip enemies' resistances and deal damage at the same time.
Furthermore, its inherent ability is Saboteur Siphon, which allows you to restore ATB by damaging enemies who have status ailments. These abilities will help you make short work of your foes.
6 Dragoon
The Dragoon is the kind of garb that lets you lock deeper into the complexities of Lightning Returns' battle system. You receive this garb as a reward for completing the Death Game sidequest in Yusnaan on the second day. Although, you'll have to finish the Death Safari sidequest first in order to unlock it.
The Dragoon adds to your ATB and boosts your stagger capability, which lets you manipulate enemies more effectively. It also has Lancet as its locked ability, which allows you to steal enemies' health when you damage them.
5 Cyber Jumpsuit
The Cyber Jumpsuit is available for purchase at Arty Outfitters in Yusnaan on day two. While most of the other garbs on this list earn their place for their offensive power, the Cyber Jumpsuit is useful because it's one of the most powerful defensive outfits in the game.
The Cyber Jumpsuit has Dispel as its locked ability, which lets you debuff enemies; it also boosts both your physical and magical resistance, which allows you to power through enemy attacks.
4 Soldier Of Peace
Soldier Of Peace is, frankly, one of the ugliest garbs in the game, but if you can look past its aesthetics, you'll find a very useful outfit. You'll receive this garb as a reward for completing the sidequest The Hunter's Challenge in the Wildlands region, which requires you to slay several monsters.
This garb is particularly useful in boss encounters, as its abilities allow you to deal incredibly high damage, ignoring their defense. It's a great option to have in your back pocket for particularly challenging encounters.
3 Purple Lightning
You can earn the Purple Lightning garb by completing the Rose By Any Other Name sidequest in Luxerion. To do so, you'll have to first complete the Voice From The Grave sidequest, which will supply you with the necessary item.
Purple Lightning has two locked abilities, but they're very useful for staggering enemies. Beyond that, though, the garb also allows you to move fast, which is a useful attribute in Lightning Returns' fast-paced battles. Plus, it looks pretty cool.
2 Spira's Summoner
Spira's Summoner is one of the garbs accessible through DLC;. It's unfortunate that Square decided to lock some of Lightning's most powerful garbs behind a paywall, but this outfit wouldn't really fit in the main game since it's just a reference to Final Fantasy 10. It's Yuna's outfit from that game (before her drastic redesign), complete with her victory pose upon winning a battle.
The garb includes an extra-powerful Elementa spell, which inflicts all-element damage on enemies. This makes it unfairly powerful, and among the strongest garbs in the whole game.
1 Midnight Mauve
The Midnight Mauve garb is one of the most accessible on this list. You get it as a reward for completing the sidequest The Fighting Actress in Yusnaan, which requires you to defeat three different enemies. This quest is available fairly early in the game, so it's surprising that the Midnight Mauve garb is as good as it is. It increases your ATB and gives you access to a level three Fira spell, which lets you build a solid mage loadout.
This early availability is why it places at the top. Not only is it a great garb when you get it, but paired with the right equipment, it remains a great garb throughout the game.
