The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power just got a new trailer that you won’t even need Amazon Prime to see this time. The two-and-a-half minute trailer showcases some of the faces we’ll see repeatedly during the show, including a young elven warrior named Galadriel who has some unfortunate news for the Elves of Middle-earth.
Beginning with a meteor striking in the territories of the hobbits, we’re later shown a dwarf holding up a gem saying "this could be the beginning of a new era," perhaps portending the forging of the Rings of Power. Meanwhile, Galadriel is seen in full-plate armor and wielding a massive sword, warning her fellows of a terrible war between good and evil for the fate of the world.
Other major plot points of the series showcased in the trailer include the fall of the island kingdom of Númenor, mankind’s most prosperous and powerful nation, the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron, and the last alliance between Elves and men. It does seem like the human faction is the one always heading off to war, however, while the dwarves remain in their mines and the elves and hobbits remain in their forests.
Set thousands of years before The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, showrunners JD Payne and Patrick McKay said that they don't plan to one-up Peter Jackson's many movies in Amazon's new series.
"Anyone approaching Lord Of The Rings on screen would be wrong not to think about how wonderfully right [Jackson] got so much of it," said McKay in a recent interview. "But we’re admirers from afar, that’s it. The Rings Of Power doesn’t try to compete with him."
McKay added they're also not trying to compete with House of the Dragon, the new Game of Thrones spinoff series coming to HBO, saying, "You can psych yourself out in keeping up with the Joneses."
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power arrives on Amazon Prime on September 2.
