Mortal Kombat Creator Ed Boon Says Not To Expect News "Soon"

Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon has said not to expect news from the series "soon".

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Mortal Kombat which, when coupled with rumours that NetherRealm will be switching up its release schedule, has caused many fans of the series to expect some sort of announcement for a new game. That hasn't happened so far, despite there having been a few events and chances in the year, and series creator Ed Boon might have just confirmed that we won't be seeing anything for a while.

Ed Boon shared a video on his Twitter of a behind the scenes look at the making of the original Mortal Kombat, specifically focusing on Raiden and showing how his hat got accidentally destroyed. As is the case with pretty much any post from Boon, one fan commented underneath saying, "Hey (Ed Boon) speaking of the 30th anniversary, are we expecting something big soon or no?"

Boon then responded very simply by saying, "Soon? No". Although this might seem pretty cut and dry, the rumours surrounding NetherRealm Studios and Boon's reputation as liking to mess with his fans makes this quite an interesting response.

For starters, it's not clear what game the studio is working on next as it usually jumps between Injustice and Mortal Kombat, but rumours have implied that it might be sticking with Mortal Kombat for another entry, something Boon backed up when he said NetherRealm was breaking its usual release schedule for whatever it's working on next. This means that when Boon says "Soon? No.", it's not clear if he's playing along with the idea that Mortal Kombat is next or saying no because it's actually another project.

The real sticking point is "soon", as that's an incredibly undefinable amount of time and could basically mean any time in the near future. Does this year count as soon to Ed Boon? It's impossible to tell, but if taken literally then it looks like we won't be seeing anything from NetherRealm over the next few months, so you can probably count it out of Summer Games Fest.
