Magic: The Gathering’s 30th Anniversary Edition commemorative booster packs continues to attract the ire of the community, as the latest trailer showing off the product has been thoroughly ratioed by unhappy players.
Though the trailer has received 462 likes at the time of writing, it has been completely eclipsed by the 6,200 dislikes – giving it a 93 percent dislike ratio. Add to that the thousands of angry comments calling out the Anniversary Edition’s high price and non-standard card backing, and things probably couldn’t be going worse for this release.
Hosted by Commander Rules Authority member Olivia Gobert-Hicks and Hall of Famer Brian Kibler, the trailer is a fairly in-depth look at the 30th Anniversary Collection. It highlights some of the iconic cards found in it, such as the Mox artifacts, dual lands, and, of course, Black Lotus. Notably, it also mentions the price tag of $999.99 for four booster packs of 15 cards each, and the use of a nonstandard card back that makes the cards illegal to play in sanctioned events.
Following the initial announcement last month, the backlash from the Magic community has been intense. It was later exacerbated by the news that certain celebrity Magic players, such as former pro athletes Hunter Pence and Cassius Marsh, received complementary packs of it from Wizards, further pushing the narrative that this is a product for the richest and most invested, rather than the average player.
The comments of the trailer highlight the level of anger the community has felt towards 30th Anniversary Collection. Among them, it has been described as “disgusting and sad”, “a product that everyone hates”, and “hands-down one of the most tone-deaf videos I have ever seen”. Numerous players have also mentioned how it has encouraged them to explore proxying (using unofficial cards), such as “thanks for making my printer a legitimate way to play Magic now” and “time to celebrate the 30th anniversary by buying myself a printer and some paper”.
Orders for the limited print run of 30th Anniversary Edition begin on November 28. Unless you recently attended Magic 30, then you might already have some booster packs of it in your goodie bag.
