Nintendo Switch 2 release date latest: More signs point towards imminent launch

More evidence has emerged that the Nintendo Switch 2 could launch much sooner than expected. It was recently suggested that the Nintendo Switch 2 could launch as early as April 2024. This was based on a report by Chinese site MoneyDJ, which claimed that a company called Hongzhun is manufacturing metal cases for a Nintendo Switch successor launching after April 2024. The reports have sinced been backed up by Microsoft court documents, which speculate that the Nintendo Switch 2 will have a 2024 release date.

“Microsoft tracks Xbox’s performance against PlayStation not because those two consoles provide a complete competitive landscape, but rather because they were released at the same time,” reads a Microsoft document submitted to the courts.

“Switch was released three years earlier, and Nintendo is expected to release the successor to the Switch as early as next year, whereas PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X|S are at a different stage of the console life cycle.”

With the Nintendo Switch closing in on its seven-year anniversary, the belief is that a new Nintendo console release date is imminent.

Nintendo previously ruled out a fiscal 23/24 launch for the Nintendo Switch successor, which means that the Switch 2 will launch in the first quarter of the next financial year – so any time after April 2024.

The rumours of a Nintendo Switch follow up have been gaining ground in recent months, as more and more leaks come to light.

Sharp is rumoured to be manufacturing screens for the new device, while one European developer reportedly has a dev-kit.

It will certainly make the next few Nintendo Direct conferences worth watching, as we close in on an official reveal.

In terms of Nintendo Switch 2 games, the lack of footage suggests that Metroid Prime 4 could be one of the big Nintendo Switch 2 games at launch. A new 3D Mario game would also make sense for the Nintendo Switch 2.

In the meantime, Nintendo is getting ready to release its final batch of Switch games, including Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Super Mario RPG and Pikmin 4.

Pikmin 4 will make its Nintendo Switch debut on July 21, complete with new gameplay features such as a canine companion for transporting Pikmin and smashing obstacles.
