Everyone was pleased to hear the news that Steam Decks can now be bought without reservations – except for Nintendo, probably. A new YouTube video from Valve that confirms this news shows the hybrid console using software that the Switch producer will not be a fan of, given its hardline stance against piracy.
In a blink-and-you-'ll-miss-it cameo, the official video from Valve shows a Steam Deck using Nintendo Switch emulator, Yuzu. Yuzu is shown in the "recent games" section of Steam, hinting that the Deck user in the video had recently been enjoying some Nintendo games through very illegitimate means. The video is still up at the time of writing, with Valve not reacting to the fact that this apparent slight against Nintendo made it into the video.
Game industry reporter Nibel was among the first to sport this reference, showing that the Yuzu logo is clearly visible in the new Steam Deck trailer. You can see it yourself in the video below if you skip to the 1:39 mark.
For obvious reasons, Nintendo won't be thrilled to hear that Yuzu made a cameo in the new Steam Deck update. As we've seen in the past, the company has been extremely hostile towards those who pirate its older games – even ones that you literally cannot buy through official means. It is also known to take issue with mods that still require you to have a legitimate version of the game, so the chances of it appreciating the Yuzu joke here are slim to none.
As for its more recent offerings, a Switch hacker was recently hit with a three-year prison sentence for producing modchips that allowed buyers to pirate Nintendo games. The hacker, Gary Bowser, was also ordered to pay the US government $4.5 million, and Nintendo itself a staggering $10 million. The FBI was apparently unable to locate the rest of this hacker team.
It remains to be seen if Valve has to remove the Yuzu logo as more viewers spot it. But for now, it's a pretty great in-joke for those in the know.
