Paul Dano Struggled With Sleep When Filming The Batman Due To "Intense" Riddler Scenes

Riddle me this, why did Paul Dano have trouble sleeping during The Batman filming? Apparently, it was because of the intensity of his scenes as The Riddler. The actor has revealed that he had difficulty “coming down” from some of the intense moments he filmed as the quizzical Batman villain.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Dano delved into the intensity of his scenes in the upcoming superhero flick and how they affected him. He admitted that “there were some nights around that I probably didn’t sleep as well as I would’ve wanted to just because it was a little hard to come down from this character”. He continued to say that “it takes a lot of energy to get there. And so, you almost have to sustain it once you’re there because going up and down is kind of hard”.

During the interview, the actor pointed out one particularly intense sequence of filming that involved Peter Sarsgarrd’s Gotham district attorney Gil Colson. Though he didn’t delve into what went down during the scene, he remarked on how “intense” it was. However, some of the intensity and sleep deprivation that Dano suffered through had nothing to do with The Riddler’s depravity, but rather the actor’s methods. He shared that it was his idea to have this iteration of The Riddler completely cover himself in plastic wrap to avoid leaving DNA at his crime scenes. Director Matt Reeves loved the idea, and they went with it.

Unfortunately, after an hour or so, the heat became too much to bear. When the mask came off, Dano’s whole head throbbed and the compression, mixed with a lack of oxygen and intense heat, kept the actor up all night. Luckily, a trip back to the drawing board allowed the costume department to come up with a more breathable, but still creepy, solution.

With The Batman being given a PG-13 rating, it's hard to imagine The Riddler getting too intense. Still, it sounds like this version of The Riddler is going to be a bit darker than the one that sends Batman all over Gotham looking for tiny, glowing question mark trophies. Although, that is dark in its own way.

The Batman hits cinemas on March 4.
