Pokemon Red & Blue Nuzlocke Checklist Guide

If you’re attempting a Pokemon Red & Blue Nuzlocke challenge, then you can keep track of the Pokemon you can catch with our helpful checklist.

Every Nuzlocke challenge follows two rules: 1) If a Pokemon faints, it’s considered dead and can no longer be used for the rest of the run, and 2) The trainer can only catch the first wild Pokemon they encounter in each area. As such, there are only a limited number of Pokemon available to the player, but there are lots of routes and fishing spots in towns, so you have access to more party members than you think.

Route 1

Most Nuzlocke runs require the player to abandon their starter as soon as possible. Don’t worry too much about choosing between Pidgey and Rattata, as you’ll have plenty of chances to catch more of them in the future.

You won’t receive a rod until later in the game, so don’t forget to come back if you need another Water-type Pokemon.

Route 2

Bug-type Pokemon make their first appearance on this route, but don’t worry about the low chance of encountering one, as you’ll be seeing more of them soon.

Viridian Forest

If you’re extremely lucky, you will catch a Pikachu here, as it’s one of the few Electric-type Pokemon you can encounter in the wild. A Pikachu will make the Misty Gym battle a breeze, so long at doesn’t get KO’d by Brock.

Route 3

A Jigglypuff encounter will be your best bet here, especially as you’ll soon be in Mt. Moon, where you can find a Moon Stone that will evolve it into Wigglytuff.

Route 4

This route has some of the first version exclusives in the game. Sandshrew is especially useful for Blue players, as it will make Lt. Surge a lot easier.

Chances are, you’re going to catch a Zubat. They’re everywhere in Mt. Moon, so make peace with the fact that a dumb bat is probably going to be on your team. They can make a decent addition when they involve into Golbat.

Misty presents a tough roadblock for Nuzlocke players, due to the lack of Grass-type Pokemon available up until this point. It’s best to grind before coming here, as her Starmie can be difficult under the best of circumstances.

Route 5

A Meowth is especially useful during this run, as it can learn Pay Day, which will ensure that the player always has access to cash for Poke Balls.

Route 6

These routes will give you a chance to catch one of the exclusive Grass-type Pokemon (Oddish in Red, Bellsprout in Blue). Both are decent choices for the early stages of the game, but you’ll need a Leaf Stone to fully evolve them.

The Gym battle against Lt. Surge will be easy if you have a Ground-type Pokemon, as it will be immune to his team. If you only have Flying-type or Water-type Pokemon, then you’re in trouble.

Route 7

This route has a slim chance of spawning a version exclusive Fire-type Pokemon (Growlithe in Red, Vulpix in Blue). There are barely any Fire-types in this generation, so train one if you catch it.

Celadon City

Erika runs the Grass-type Gym, which means she will easily fall to Fire-type moves. Those can be hard to come by, but she’ll also be defeated by Bug-type and Flying-type moves.

This route offers a better chance of acquiring a Fire-type exclusive than Route 7, so make sure to visit it.

This route has a high spawn rate for Voltorb, which could be your best bet for an Electric-type Pokemon during the early stages of the game.

There is a good chance that you’ll be stuck with Zubat here, but Geodude makes a good partner when training up new members of the team, as it can soak up a lot of damage when facing wild Pokemon.

Pokemon Tower

Gen 1 only had one Ghost-type line. Fortunately, you have a high chance of catching one of them, as Gastly has a 90% chance of spawning on the third floor of the Pokemon Tower. This is an excellent Pokemon and it’s well worth adding to your team.

You’re guaranteed to receive one of the Diglett line here, ensuring that you have a Ground-type Pokemon for your line-up. It’s a decent line, and it’s helpful to keep around for Electric-type trainers.

You can acquire the Super Rod on this route. This will ensure that you have lots of chances to catch Water-type Pokemon in cities, giving you plenty of opportunities to fill out your roster, if any of your team members die.

All of these chances to catch a Pidgey might be annoying, but it’s worth keeping one to hand, so it can be used as an HM slave for Fly.

This route can only be accessed with a bicycle, so make sure you have acquired one before visiting this area.

This is one of two areas in the game where you can catch Abra. Even if you’re lucky enough to meet one, it will try and run away with Teleport. If you catch an Abra, then you’re chances of finishing the run will drastically increase, as Kadabra is one of the best Pokemon in the game. Psychic-types were OP in Pokemon Red & Blue, and Kadabra will annihilate most foes you face.

The Safari Zone is infuriating for Nuzlocke runs, as it contains so many rare Pokemon, and they’re all a nightmare to catch. There are lots of Pokemon that only appear in the Safari Zone, so pray to the RNG gods for luck before venturing forth.

The Safari Zone fishing rates are mostly the same as the regular routes, except for a few exceptions mentioned below.
