Those unhappy with the PlayStation 5’s sleek, white look may be able to swap the faceplates out with ones of a different colour.
While it was great to finally see what the PlayStation 5 looks like, not everyone is a fan of its appearance.
Some have criticised the overall look, likening it to a Wi-Fi router or an air filter, whereas others just aren’t fond of the all-white colouring.
Fans have made it clear that they want alternative colours and, while we do know of a golden PS5 console, some supposedly leaked images from an assembly line in China could indicate that fans will get options.
Rather than simply offer a black or red variant, though, these images, which were first spotted and shared on Chinese forum A9VG and then via Wccftech, suggest that the faceplates themselves can be removed and replaced.
So, hypothetically, if you bought a PlayStation 5 day one and then saw a new version with a cool Miles Morales pattern, you could instead just buy the plates and not the whole console.
Assuming that the images are real, it appears that the plates aren’t screwed on as one may expect but are attached with either pegs or hooks, so they can be easily taken off.
This doesn’t necessarily confirm it though and given how lucrative special edition consoles can be, it seems surprising that Sony would undermine them with this much cheaper alternative.
Still, with how popular alternate colours for consoles are, interchangeable plates could be a smart money-making move worth doing.
The PlayStation 5 is scheduled to release by the end of this year.
