PS5 sales pass 10 million as Ratchet & Clank numbers hit 1.1 million

Sony has announced that the PS5 is still the fastest selling PlayStation console ever, as it reveals sales numbers for its most recent games.

The fact that the PlayStation 5 is selling well is not news, but Sony’s latest console has already passed the 10 million sales milestone, after just over eight months on sale.

That makes it the fastest selling PlayStation console ever, although the fastest selling console of any kind is still the Nintendo Switch. Given the stock problems suffered by the PlayStation 5 though it’s a remarkable performance.

Since the PlayStation 4 is the second best-selling console of all time, behind the PlayStation 2, that means there’s a good chance the PlayStation 5 will equal or surpass the lifetime total of its predecessor, which currently stands at 115.81 million consoles shipped.

Although it doesn’t always do so, Sony has also revealed sales figures for some of its recent games, with Returnal selling 560,000 copies since its launch in April. There was some concern the game had been a flop but that’s a solid performance for a new IP on a console with such a small userbase.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, which is a part of a franchise that has been around for decades, has sold over 1.1 million copies since its launch on June 11.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales has sold over 6.5 million copies since its November launch, although that figure seems to include PlayStation 4 as well.

Meanwhile, baseball game MLB The Show 21 has sold 2 million copies across all platforms, which includes (likely due to licensing demands) the Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. Since it’s also on Game Pass its player count is actually 4 million.

At the same time as the results were announced Sony highlighted ‘a new God Of War’, Gran Turismo 7, and Horizon Forbidden West as some of its key exclusive for the future, but gave no new clue as to when exactly they’d be released.

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, PlayStation boss Jim Ryan claimed that the PlayStation has seen ‘double digit growth’ over the PlayStation 4 in terms of engagement, including the number of monthly users and time spent playing.

That was undoubtedly helped by people being stuck inside during lockdown but as Ryan says, ‘the engagement has surprised us, in a very pleasant way’.
