As promised, an all-new look at Return To Monkey Island was revealed at Gamescom. Best of all, its launch date was revealed, and fans of the long-running series only have a month to wait as it launches September 19, 2022.
The first Monkey Island game launched more than three decades ago, and Return To Monkey Island might well be the last new installment in the point and click adventure we ever get. Stan guided us through our latest look at the game, revealing there's less than a month to go before we can get our hands on the sixth game for ourselves. The launch date being on that day, in particular, is no accident either.
Stan clarified September 19 is International Talk Like A Pirate Day, so pretty apt for a game emanating from Monkey Island. Stan also revealed pre-orders for the game are now open, and if you want to make sure you get a copy of Return To Monkey Island as soon as possible, you will also get some horse armor along with it. In-game horse armor that is, it isn't that good of a deal
You would think Ron Gilbert, one of the minds behind the first two Monkey Island games, returning to head up a new installment in the series would be good news. Sadly, some so-called fans didn't see it that way, lashing out at Gilbert and others who have worked on Return To Monkey Island for its new art style. So much so that Gilbert declared back in June that he wouldn't be posting about the game on social media anymore.
Thankfully, reveals about the sixth game in the Moneky Island series didn't dry up entirely between then and now. Return To Monkey Island's co-writer Dave Grossman showed off some fresh footage last month, and new character Judge Plank was also revealed. Sadly for Monkey Island fans, after more than 30 years, this next game will likely be the last in the series.
