Those wandering the hallowed halls of the San Diego Convention Center have been treated to first looks at the forthcoming movie Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves characters. This comes before the film's official reveal at San Diego Comic-Con 2022.
Attendees can see cast members in their respective Dungeons & Dragons character's attire. Footage of characters played by Chris Pine, Regé-Jean Page, Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, and Hugh Grant can be seen (via Variety).
From the looks of things, Pine's character is a sword wielding bard, Rodriguez's character is some kind of fierce warrior as she slices the air with a battleaxe, while Regé-Jean Page is attired in fancy armour. Smith is decked out like a wizard, Lillis could be a ranger of some sort, and Grant holds a torch and sips some tea.
Paramount Pictures will unveil Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves during a Comic-Con panel this afternoon, with expected appearances from cast members, and directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley. While the movie is fantasy, Pine has implied it will be a more comic affair as it's influenced by films such as Monty Python and the Holy Grail, The Goonies, and The Princess Bride, in addition to your more regular modern fantasy affairs like Game of Thrones.
It'd be a change of tone, and perhaps a welcome one considering the ill-received and pompous 2000 Dungeons and Dragons movie, which starred Justin Whalin and Jeremy Irons. This adaptation of Hasbro's franchise has a 3.6/10 IMDB rating.
Not much is known about this new D&D movie, although Hugh Grant is confirmed to be playing major villain Forge Fletcher. A rumoured plotline for the film involves a thief putting together a crew to steal from a traitorous conman. But Paramount and eOne should be drawing back the curtains later today.
Following years spent in pre-production and pandemic-related delays in filming, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is scheduled to release on March 3, 2023.
