Enemies are a constant hazard in the video games world and facing them can generate very different feelings. While certain gameplay features can make fighting foes a joy, they can cause a lot of stress in rogue-like titles. This is because in cases like Spelunky 2, you only have so much health which can be very difficult to restore.
The enemies you encounter in the caverns alternate from relatively harmless to extremely aggressive and even the smallest hit can send you flying. To make things worse, more powerful opponents have appeared this time around such as Quillback, who will always be awaiting your challenge.
Who Is Quillback?
While the first Spelunky did have some boss encounters, Spelunky 2 expanded on that concept significantly. Not only are there multiple giant bosses, but there are special enemies that are strong enough to serve as elites. Quillback is one of these elites, the one who protects the exits leading into world two.
Quillback is the leader of the Cavemen, standing tall and wide with his trademark porcupine pelt across his back. No matter what you do, you will always encounter Quillback in the final area of the Dwelling. He wanders about his personal arena which is positioned in the middle of the level. It’s an open space with several ladders leading down into it and walls surrounding on all sides.
Unfortunately, there’s no consistently reliable way to avoid him. You can use Quillback’s reckless behavior to make your escape, but it’ll be worth your while to defeat him. Upon death, he’ll drop a Bomb Bag and Cooked Turkey.
How To Beat Quillback
Despite being a humanoid, Quillback’s large size makes him more akin to a moving object like a block. He has ten HP and as long as he doesn’t notice you, you can plan your attack accordingly.
- First, you should be wary of Quillback’s awareness. There’s no way to sneak up on him as he’ll sense your presence even while he's walking away.
- Quillback has two attacks: a leap and a roll. If you’re close or hanging on a ladder, Quillback will jump at you in a high but narrow arc dealing two points of damage on contact. If you’re further away, he’ll roll towards you at a speed slightly faster than your max run.
- You can avoid both of his attacks by jumping to a ladder and climbing up quickly, but be warned that his roll can instantly kill you.
- Quillback is immune to being whipped and stomped on without the boosts provided by the Powerpack and Spike Shoes, respectively. However, due to his reaction time, it’s best you avoid close combat.
- He’s vulnerable to thrown objects like Arrows and Rocks, so if you’re under-geared, make sure to check the upper levels for any throwables.
- The most effective weapons are the ranged ones such as the Shotgun and Crossbow, which will allow you to take him out quickly and in relative safety.
- You can also take Quillback out with a well-placed Bomb by getting some distance and timing his roll towards you. The best option is to collect Paste so that your Bob will stick to him and guarantee a kill.
