The game formerly leaked as Project Maverick has now been leaked under its proper name and it clearly has something to do with starfighters.
EA’s new Star Wars game has now had the indignity of being leaked by both Sony and Microsoft, as what was previously known as Project Maverick appeared on the Microsoft Store under the name Star Wars Squadrons.
Only the name and artwork was visible, alongside the tagline ‘Pilots wanted’, which makes it look very much like some kind of spiritual sequel to X-Wing Vs. TIE Fighter, as well as the later (but now still very old) Rogue Squadron.
That in turn makes it sound very much like the game Criterion wanted to make after they created the Starfighter Assault mode for Star Wars: Battlefront 2, but so far there’s no indication of their involvement.

Instead, it’s believed that Star Wars Squadrons is the first new game from EA Motive, the studio set up by Jade Raymond (who has now left) and that has so far only helped out with other titles, such as the story campaign for Battlefront 2.
We can only hope that they’re playing a similar role in this and that Criterion are handling the gameplay, but that seems fairly unlikely if Squadrons is, as all rumours suggest, a smaller budget title.
We don’t know for sure though and EA has done the sensible thing when confronted with an obvious leak and simply admitted it’s real and pointed fans towards the official unveiling on Monday.
That will happen at 4pm on 15 June, although whether that was always the plan or not is unclear, as their not-E3 EA Play event is also scheduled for 18 June.
