The studio behind the recent Star Wars: Squadrons says it is working on ‘several’ new projects and has no plans for any Squadrons DLC.
EA has had the Star Wars licence for seven years now and in that time they’ve made four console games: Battlefront 1 and 2, last year’s Fallen Order, and this month’s Squadrons.
The Battlefront games were always controversial – Battlefront 2’s use of loot boxes made it one of the most controversial games of all time – and led to many hoping that EA would lose the licence, but there’s been a turnaround since Fallen Order that has continued with Squadrons.
But despite Squadrons seeming ripe for expansion, since it’s only a mid-budget game and not a full price title, developer Motive has already said that they have no plans for extra modes or DLC – which means whatever they’re working on next must be brand new.
‘We’re not planning to add more content, this is the game, and we hope you understand the value proposition’, said Motive’s Ian Frazier to UploadVR.
‘We don’t want to say ‘it’s almost done!’ and then dribble out more of it over time, which to be honest is how most games work these days,’ he said. ‘So we’ve tried to treat it in kind of an old-school approach saying, ‘you’ve paid the $40, this is the game and it’s entirely self-contained.’
That seems especially surprising considering Motive are owned by EA but according to a new blog post they’re working on ‘several unannounced projects’.
There’s no indication whether any of these are Star Wars related, with general manager Patrick Klaus saying only that, ‘Innovation is tough, but it’s also exciting and energising.’
‘With our new mission, we’re trying a lot of things and testing many ideas which you can’t get attached to, as iteration and experimentation are healthy and a key to finding something great.’
What is the next Star Wars game?
That means that at the moment there are no known Star Wars games from EA in development, even though the success of Fallen Order all but guarantees a sequel.
There have been many rumours that BioWare are working on some sort of successor to Knights Of The Old Republic, but nothing’s been announced and the studio already has Dragon Age 4 underway and have implied a new Mass Effect after that (not counting rumours of remasters of the first three).
Other Star Wars games are constantly being released that have nothing to do with EA, such as next year’s new Lego Star Wars and Oculus Quest games such a Tales From The Galaxy’s Edge, but in terms of traditional titles nothing else has been annouced.
Earlier this year EA boss Andrew Wilson said he was going to ‘double down’ on the partnership with Disney, but for now there’s no real clue as to what new games are going to be next.
