Super Nintendo World theme park opens in US in 2023 so start making travel plans

Universal Studios and Nintendo are set to open Super Nintendo World in America next year, at their existing LA park.

Over a year has passed since Super Nintendo World opened its doors to the general public, as part of Universal Studios Tokyo. Unless you live in Japan, however, actually visiting the park hasn’t been easy, especially with the worldwide pandemic.

It’s about to become slightly easier, however, as Nintendo has announced that Super Nintendo World will make its US debut in 2023, specifically at Universal Studios Hollywood in Los Angeles.

Nintendo hasn’t shared any pictures of the park, nor any details on which attractions will be included. The announcement on its website only says that it will be ‘a visual spectacle of vibrant colours and architectural ingenuity located within a newly expanded area of the theme park, featuring a ground-breaking ride and interactive areas, to be enjoyed by the whole family.’

It’s probably safe to assume that the ‘ground-breaking ride’ Nintendo’s referring to is the augmented reality Mario Kart ride. However, Inside the Magic, which covers theme parks, previously reported that the Universal Studios Hollywood expansion will be smaller than the one in Tokyo.

This means it won’t be a one-to-one replica of the Tokyo park and some of the attractions, like the Yoshi ride, will possibly be cut. The Donkey Kong expansion likely won’t be featured either, since it’s still being built for the Tokyo park.

Universal has already started selling Super Nintendo World themed merchandise ahead of the opening, such as character hats and plush toys for the likes of Mario, Bowser, and Yoshi. This merchandise has previously been exclusive to Japan.

A second US based Super Nintendo World is still being planned for the Universal Orlando Resort in Florida, as well as one for Universal Studios Singapore, but they aren’t expected to open until 2025 at the earliest.

As for Universal’s Mario movie, there’s no sign of a trailer despite the movie releasing in cinemas this December. The only substantial information we have about it is its cast list, with Chris Pratt headlining the movie as the titular plumber – although he’s already implied he won’t be doing the voice.
