Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth is a cult classic RPG that spawned a series of fantastic games, and it has been remastered multiple times, most recently for the latest generation of PlayStation consoles, with added quicksaving and quickloading capabilities.
This is not to say that the game can be rolled over with save-scumming – it is still a complicated game that is very much 'of its time,' with all the complex mechanics and neat secrets to find that its time of origin would imply.
Movement Tips
There are a few things that the game does not tell you about Lenneth's abilities in the field, specifically relating to movement and her crystal energy ability.
- The first is that Lenneth has a sliding dash – to perform this, hold down to make Lenneth crouch, and then hit Circle to make her slide in the direction she's facing. This can be used to bypass some dungeon sections, and in some areas it's necessary.
- Jumping off of ladders can be quite finicky – a good way to make sure you have a good amount of momentum behind your jumps is to press the jump button and the direction you want to jump at the same time. Once you have the timing down, you'll never perform those limp, annoying jumps ever again.
- There is at least one dungeon with horizontal ladders that you must hang from – to attach to them, you just have to jump up to it and press the up button to cling on.
- As far as magic crystals go, it's helpful to know that you can hit a crystal with another projectile to turn it into a slightly larger crystal. This will give you taller platforms to work with. Hitting a larger crystal with another projectile will destroy it without leaving behind shards.
Einherjar Transfer Tips
In every chapter of the game, Freya will task you with sending up one of your recruited Einherjar to Valhalla, with a list of requirements. It is well worth sending at least one Einherjar to Valhalla per chapter – you'll get lots of Materialize Points (your main currency) and some artifacts based on the quality of the character you send.
While Freya doesn't tell you this, the first chapter's requirements are any hero with at least 40 Hero Value. Do not send Llewelyn – a future chapter will require an Archer and there is no guarantee that you'll get another Archer in the meantime, making Llewelyn your only option. Send Belenus or Jelanda instead.
Some chapters will ask for combinations of abilities that may be functionally impossible to meet thank to your current roster of Einherjar. In these cases, do not be tempted to send up multiple characters – a maximum of two per chapter. There are two reasons for this:
- Sending up more heroes means you'll have fewer warriors to work with – once they're sent up, they're useless to you and you cannot get them back.
- Getting the best ending (on Hard mode only) requires that you have a low Seal Rating. Sending up more warriors will increase this, making the Seal Rating requirement hard to achieve.
Try to meet as many of the requirements as possible and you'll still be evaluated positively and get good rewards. Remember that the equipment you send up with the character will contribute to their Hero Value.
Be very careful when sending a warrior! All the equipment that they take with them will be lost forever! Unequip important items before sending them.
Artifacts And When To Transfer Them
Whenever you complete a dungeon by defeating the boss at the end of it, you will be presented with some treasure chests – usually right in front of you, sometimes a little way away.
When you open these chests, you'll be prompted to choose whether or not you send the artifacts within up to Odin or not, with a warning that you will be evaluated negatively for keeping the artifact.
There is no reason not to keep every single artifact for yourself! As long as you transfer one character to Odin per chapter with a decent Hero Value and good stats, you'll have more than enough Evaluation to survive. Even the seemingly useless artifacts can eventually be transmuted into something useful once you unlock better methods of Transmutation!
Exploiting The EXP Orb
As you progress through Valkyrie Profile's dungeons, solving puzzles and defeating bosses will earn you lots of Event Experience. This can be allotted using the Party menu to boost a character's experience instantly through the EXP Orb, even leveling them up if you have enough.
This function can be exploited very easily using two specific Decorations: the Emerald Necklace and the Bracelet of Zoe.
- If you're playing on Normal or Hard mode, you can unlock Solde Catacombs very early on. One of the artifacts you can get at the end of this dungeon is the Emerald Necklace – and this is something you might receive from Odin at the end of a chapter, too.
- The Emerald Necklace will increase the number of Capacity Points a character receives when they level up by 100 points.
- Bracelets of Zoe can be acquired from Odin after a good evaluation post-chapter. They can also drop from certain bosses, or be transmuted from the Golden Egg or Holy Grail artifacts. There is one configuration of the Cave of Oblivion that always rewards you with a Golden Egg, so make sure you visit it and explore it every chapter to get yours.
- The Bracelet of Zoe will increase the amount of DME a character receives when they level up by 300 points.
- Acquire both an Emerald Necklace and a Bracelet of Zoe as soon as you can, using the methods outlined above.
- When a character is very close to leveling up, equip them with both of these Decorations.
- Instead of leveling up through combat, level them up with the EXP Orb.
- Unequip the Decorations, putting them on any other characters who are close to leveling up and repeating the process.
The exploit is quite simple:
Using this method, you can make sure everyone gets the full 300 DME and 100 Capacity Points every time they level up, giving them far earlier access to high-level skills and severely increasing their health totals, and you won't have to forgo any level-up bonuses for characters who would normally level up at the same time.
This is also a fantastic way to give new characters a massive boost on Hard mode, where every character joins at level one.
Note that equipping multiples of these Decorations will not make the level-up bonus stack.
Breakable Weapons
Many of the weapons you'll come across in the game are breakable – you'll find this information in the weapon's description, along with the percentage chance that the weapon breaks when used. The game checks this chance whenever you end a turn in battle, so using breakable weapons encourages strategic play and quick battles, especially as these weapons are generally far stronger than their unbreakable counterparts.
Specific weapons to only use when you can take advantage of their special effects are the Killer weapons, such as the Dragon Killer. They're used to totally decimate certain enemy types and shouldn't be used in regular battles, despite how powerful they are.
Plenty of Staves in the game will have very high break chances – you should be aware that Staves only break when you use them to perform a Purify Weird Soul attack at the end of a combo – using them normally to cast spells, offensive or supportive, will never break a Staff.
If you're wary of a Staff breaking, just don't use the mage's PWS.
