Weekend Hot Topic, part 2: Worst video game purchase

GameCentral readers reveal the most money they’ve ever regretted spending on a video game related item, including consoles.

The subject for this week’s Hot Topic was suggested by reader Xane and includes everything from an early mistake as a child to a more recent purchase, including games, hardware, and merchandise.

Everyone makes mistakes and there were plenty of examples of things people had preferred they hadn’t spent money on, mostly because of not reading reviews or sudden impulse purchases.

Pile of nothing
Considering it’s been in the news a lot lately the one that immediately jumped out to me for this Hot Topic is Mass Effect: Andromeda. It’s probably the biggest disappointment I’ve ever had for a video game, given how much I loved the original and I was (still am really) just shocked at how bad it was, even if it was BioWare’s B-team or whatever.

I played through the whole game, which took a disappointingly short amount of time, and just felt nothing by the end. I either hated or didn’t care about all the characters and I could barely tell you anything that happened in it after all these years (heck, probably after just a couple of weeks).

The worst thing though was that I bought the Collector’s Edition with the remote control Nomad vehicle. The Nomad is actually really cool as a toy, it works and the app lets you see the floor from its view and everything. But because the game was a big fat pile of nothing I didn’t care about the Nomad or anything else, so ended it up meaning nothing to me. Except for a very sizeable hole in my pocket.

Bad sale
An easy one for me this. I once traded in around five unnamed SNES cartridges for an import copy of Pop’n Twinbee (after being enamoured with Parodius in its various forms) and paid around £40 for the pleasure. It was no Parodius sadly.

Or it could have been the time I sold my day one SNES to buy a BB gun. Yes, definitely that decision ranks as number one in my gaming regrets.

Cyberpunk 2077 on Stadia…. just saying.

Fool me once…
I think my biggest regret was buying a new slim PlayStation 3 at the end of its life cycle just to play exclusives. It cost over £200 and thinking back the only game I really enjoyed was The Last Of Us. I played others but none that really grabbed me. I should add I have been a mainly Xbox gamer since the original was released.

As I said in an Inbox letter recently, a neighbour has lent me a PlayStation 4 to play the exclusives this time (I’d previously considered buying a second-hand PlayStation 4).

Didn’t git gud
For me the game I most regret has to be Bloodborne I got it launch day and got stuck within five minutes. I signed the contract, went outside, round the corner, killed an enemy, went down some stairs and from that point on I kept dying and never got past going down the stairs. So since March 2015 I’ve got one Trophy and that was signing the contract, which is what you do as part of the story.

It’s been six years now and I’ve never put it back in my PlayStation 4 or 5. Thing that makes me laugh is if Bloodborne 2 came out I’d go out and buy it launch day, get stuck after 4 minutes this time, and never play it again. And why do that you ask? Because I’m a plum and don’t learn from my mistakes.

Beam me up
I purchased Star Trek: Starship Creator back when you bought PC games on disc. It was an impulse buy, I liked the cover art on the box and the premise of outfitting a ship and taking it out on missions.

If memory serves it amounted to watching an icon of a ship move across the map and back again with only a few lines of text being shown in-between. It is the only game I have ‘played’ where I sat and said to myself when is the game going to start? The music was the only decent thing about it. What made it even worse was it was a full-price game.

If there has been a worse proper game (i.e. not a clone or fake game) released I would be surprised. Since then, I wait for reviews and never pre-order.

Part of the collection
It’s not so much the amount of money, as far as I remember it cost the usual amount, but the one I resent paying for the most is Metroid: Other M. I’m a huge Metroid fan and this ranks as one of the biggest letdowns ever in gaming.

I’ve kept it, not only because it has almost zero resell value but because I insist on having a collection of all the games in the series. But it really pains me to see it sitting there on the shelf.

Take no chances
I’m sure some wag is going to say an Xbox Series X, although I wonder if anyone has made a joke about Cyberpunk 2077? Too soon maybe?

Anyway, must most regrated purchase is Assassin’s Creed Unity. An absolutely terrible game at launch that was at least as broken as Cyberpunk 2077 is now, which shows how little companies really care about these things. The more I think about it the more he situation seems the same. Except because it’s Assassin’s Creed nobody really cared that much and I guess they patched it later or something? I don’t know because I sold it almost instantly.

The reason I mention it though is because it was the point at which I just stopped buying games new at full price, especially without having read a review or getting the gist of the general reaction. I imagine Cyberpunk 2077 will also be having the same effect on many other people. Companies have just got to stop doing this just to hit a deadline. People are going to buy good games whenever they come out and the damage having a broken one out instead is much more than it just being late.

Or at least that’s what I’d hope. Seems all too often companies don’t care what they put out there as long as people are willing to take a chance on it.
