EA Sports’ long-running FIFA franchise is back for another year with FIFA 21. It’s not the most surprising release, but the trend of releasing in September will be broken, as FIFA 21 won’t launch until October 9 on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. While EA Sports has yet to discuss FIFA 21 in detail, if you grab the soccer sim every year, you can already pre-order multiple different editions and snag some cool bonuses, too.
FIFA 21, like Madden NFL 21, will have a free next-gen upgrade for PS5 and Xbox Series X. If you buy FIFA 21 on Xbox One, you’ll get an upgrade to the Xbox Series X edition when it releases. The same goes for those who buy the PS4 version and late purchase a PS5. EA Sports briefly showed off FIFA 21 running on next-gen hardware during its EA Play stream, and it’s safe to say that the soccer sim will get fairly noticeable visual improvements on PS5 and Xbox Series X. That said, EA has said there won’t be cross-play between current and next-gen versions of FIFA 21, though progress on Ultimate Team will carry over.

You should know that while FIFA 21 is releasing on Switch, it’s once again a “Legacy edition” that hasn’t been updated much at all really. Outside of kit and squad updates, FIFA 21 is basically the same as FIFA 18 (yes, really), which means no story mode, no Volta mode, and none of the new gameplay updates added in recent years.
EA Sports is planning on outlining the changes and new features in FIFA 21 in August, with details coming on career mode, Volta, Ultimate Team, Pro Clubs, and the general gameplay improvements. We recently learned that Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappé will be the cover athlete.
For now, you can pre-order FIFA 21 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, with multiple editions and pre-order bonuses available. On PC, you can pre-order through EA’s Origin platform or Steam. FIFA 21 will also come to Stadia, but a release date hasn’t been announced.
FIFA 21 pre-order bonuses
As always, FIFA 21 bonuses are dictated by which edition you pre-order. But if you pre-order the standard edition on PS4, Xbox One, or PC, you’ll get the following goodies:

- Cover Star Loan Item
- FUT Ambassador Player Pick: Pick one of three player items for three FUT matches
- Special-edition FUT Kits and stadium items
The Nintendo Switch version doesn’t currently have any digital pre-order offers.
All physical edition pre-orders at Best Buy will come with a Funko Pop of cover athlete Kylian Mbappé.
