Golf Story was an early indie hit on the Nintendo Switch back in 2017, garnering rave reviews from critics and fans alike. Well, if you were hoping to get your hands on its follow-up this year, we have bad news: the sequel to the game, Sports Story, has been delayed by developer Sidebar Games.
Sports Story was originally scheduled to release sometime in 2020, but that’s unfortunately no longer the case. “The game has become rather ambitious and we are excited about how it could turn out,” the developer said in a follow-up tweet. “But the price is currently being paid as we try to make our plans into reality. We are eager to reveal the results of these past 2 years so please look forward to future updates.”
As its name implies, Sports Story will bring a more diverse array of pixelated sports to the world of Golf Story, including soccer. Though Sidecar Games blames the game’s ambitious nature for the delay, the ongoing coronavirus pandemic (and other concerns) have forced delays of several high-profile titles in the past few weeks, including Halo: Infinite and Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2.
In GameSpot’s 8/10 Golf Story review, our critic called the game “zany, unexpectedly funny, and mechanically sound.” “It has successfully captured the trappings of yesteryear’s RPGs, and the witticisms and idiosyncrasies of the characters you encounter are a great palate cleanser between rounds,” a portion of it reads. “Switch has had a swathe of indies hit its eShop recently, but if you’re looking for something that’ll give you satisfaction in terms of an interesting story and a rewarding mechanic, then Golf Story is certainly par for the course.”
