Lava is nothing new to Mario fans. The fiery hazard has been in plenty of games, from the original Super Mario Bros. 2D side-scroller to the more recent Super Mario Odyssey. But what if every single level, even the tranquil beaches of Mario’s worlds, had lava everywhere?
Thanks to the modding work of Amethyst-szs, you no longer have to imagine. Their mod takes Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury to a new level by making most of the ground in Bowser’s Fury into lethal lava. Sure, not all of the ground is lava — some paths like bridges and walkways are still normal. While the levels are still playable, they’re a lot more difficult to beat.
You can see it in action in this video posted by YouTuber ProsafiaGaming, who plays through the mod. In Scamper Shores, the player starts off just following the regular boardwalk path, and that’s simple enough. However, keep moving through the level and it gets progressively more difficult. What used to be white sand is now untouchable lava.
At one point, the player has to use a lookout point to climb up high, and then jump and dive onto a tree to avoid the lava. From there, the video shows Mario jumping from tree to tree until the player takes him close enough to a wall to climb up to a safer spot. The cat power-up is especially helpful in moments like these, as it allows you climb up walls that aren’t lava. It’s all very reminiscent of the childhood game “The floor is lava,” during which participants jump from couch to cushion to avoid the pretend lava that covers the floor.
While these treacherous levels are beatable, the maker said that to their knowledge, it’s currently only possible to get 86 out the total 100 collectibles within Bowser’s Fury, also known as Cat Shines. On the game’s page, the maker says that if anyone manages to get more, then they’d “love to see how you did it.”
