The Epic Games Store has been giving away free PC games every week–no strings attached–since the storefront launched in late 2018. As of now, we know the program will run until at least the end of 2020. It’s pretty straightforward; every Thursday at 8 AM PT / 11 AM ET, Epic offers one, two, or occasionally even three games completely free of charge. To claim the games, you simply need to register for a free Epic account. After registering and claiming your games, they are yours to keep in your digital library forever.

This week’s free game at Epic
This week’s freebie, For the King, is now live and available to claim until April 30. For the King is set in the kingdom of Fahrul in the aftermath of the titular king’s murder. The queen calls upon the citizens to restore peace to the lands that have descended into chaos. Played solo or cooperatively either online or locally with up to three players, For the King blends turn-based RPG combat with tabletop mechanics. A 100-side die dictates much of the actions in For the King, while exploration is done from a top-down perspective on a hex map, much like a tactics game.
As the world is procedurally generated, each run offers something new in terms of the layout and the enemies you encounter. For the King also has a handful of differentiated campaigns, which were released as free DLC, to add even more replay value.
Next week’s free games at Epic
Every time a new freebie goes live, Epic reveals what users have to look forward to for next week. Starting April 30, PC users can claim Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Crashlands.
Amnesia: The Dark Descent is a first-person survival horror game starring Daniel, a man who awakens in a Prussian castle in 1839 with no memories besides his own name. Throughout the adventure, he explores the castle and slowly pieces together the mystery of who he is and why his memory is gone. Along the way, you solve object manipulation puzzles and flee from monsters that creep in the shadows. Though it released way back in 2010, it’s still worth a look if you haven’t played it yet. The game earned an 8.5/10 in GameSpot’s Amnesia: The Dark Descent review.
Crashlands is cartoonish action-RPG set on an alien planet. You play as galactic trucker Flux Dabes, who is unfortunately stranded on said planet and soon becomes part of a high stakes adventure where the fate of the world is on the line. With a heavy emphasis on loot and crafting, Crashlands is an engrossing isometric action-RPG with fast-paced combat and humorous writing. While GameSpot hasn’t reviewed Crashlands, it currently holds a “Very Positive” user score on Steam.
