Regarded by many as the best game in the Saints Row franchise, Saints Row: The Third moved even further away from the gritty tone of the first game, finding its footing as a zany open-world playground filled with cool (and sometimes inappropriate) weapons and a whole lot of jokes. Saints Row: The Third was ported to Nintendo Switch last year, but now Deep Silver is developing a remastered version of the 2011 hit for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Saints Row: The Third Remastered releases May 22, and it’s available to pre-order now from multiple retailers.
Saints Row: The Third took players to the spacious city of Steelport, a city controlled by the crime enterprise dubbed The Syndicate. The story of the Third Street Saints going head-to-head against Syndicate and the trio of gangs that roam the streets isn’t what stood out; the off-the-wall scenarios, hilarious dialogue, engaging mission design, and over-the-top action was what made Saints Row: The Third such a crowd-pleaser.
Back in 2011, GameSpot gave the original game an 8.5/10 in our Saints Row: The Third review. “Saints Row: The Third is buoyed to great heights by terrific mission design and by the remarkable assortment of vehicles and weapons it gives you with which to take over Steelport. Whether you’re buying up property to increase your hourly income, cruising the city in your favorite vehicle to collect photo ops, drug packages, and sex dolls, or punching people to bits with those crazy apocafists, there’s rarely a dull moment,” critic Carolyn Petit wrote.
The Remastered version features updated visuals, textures remade from the ground up, and a new lighting engine. It comes with every piece of Saints Row: The Third DLC, including the three expansion packs and more than 30 add-on packs featuring cosmetic items, weapons, and vehicles.
While you can expect the remastered version to look better, it will be locked to 30 frames per second on consoles (60 frames per second on PC, though). Deep Silver also removed split-screen local co-op from the remaster, but you can still play cooperatively online with a friend.
