Shadow Warrior 3’s first teaser spares us further Wang jokes

The first teaser trailer for Shadow Warrior 3 is built on a pretty good gag: The game’s protagonist, Lo Wang, is contractually obligated to film said teaser for developer Flying Wild Hog and publisher Devolver Digital, but seems genuinely enthusiastic to show off the sequel’s new stuff, like a grappling hook, and kill things.

Thankfully, there are no tired, ripped-from-1997 “Who wants some Wang?” attempts at humor here. It appears that veteran anime voice actor Jason Liebrecht will return to voice Lo Wang.

For the follow-up to 2016’s Shadow Warrior 2, Polish studio Flying Wild Hog is aiming for “a completely fresh experience.” According to game director Kuba Opoń, “we hope that Shadow Warrior 3 will feel like a homecoming for those fans that have been with us since the beginning.”

Shadow Warrior 3 finds Lo Wang and his former employer turned nemesis turned sidekick Orochi Zilla embarking on an improbable mission to recapture an ancient dragon they unwillingly unleashed from its eternal prison. Armed with a punishing mix of blades and bullets, Lo Wang must traverse uncharted parts of the world to track down the dark beast and push the apocalypse back yet again. All it will take is the mask of a dead god, a dragon’s egg, a touch of magic, and enough firepower to tear down the encroaching Shadowlands.

More Shadow Warrior 3 details, including a gameplay trailer, will be revealed at Devolver Direct, the publisher’s digital showcase. Devolver Direct will air on Saturday, July 11 at 12 p.m. PT on Twitch, with more information coming the following week.

Polygon’s review of Shadow Warrior 2 was critical of the game’s Asian stereotypes and “hollow” feel: “The characters are lifeless, the jokes aren’t funny, the story is worthless, and the levels are repetitive. There might be a place for a 1997-style game in 2016 — something simple with a narrow focus that plays on many of the boring, sexist, and lazy traditions that gaming has left behind — but Shadow Warrior 2 isn’t nearly enough.”
