There are plenty of dogs to pet in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla … but have you seen the cats? You can pet the cats in Valhalla, too, but Ubisoft also added the ability to pick up cats and snuggle them. But the thing I’m wondering is: What breed are these? I know Eivor is a fearsome drengr and all, but how does she even pick these things up? They’re dang huge!
I mean, look at this guy:

The cats look to be relatively normal-sized when they’re on the ground. But in Eivor’s arms, we can truly appreciate the sheer scale of these cats.

Eivor is a fairly large human, compared to the Anglo-Saxons in England. This cat is clearly larger than Eivor’s head — in fact, the cat’s head is around two-thirds the size of Eivor’s head! It’s got to be around 20 pounds. Frankly, if these cats didn’t have long tails, I might believe they’re actually bobcats. There are, of course, other large cat species. Polygon managing editor (and cat expert) Chelsea Stark suggested these may be Norwegian Forest Cats. Apparently, early ancestors of the Norwegian Forest Cat often lived on Viking ships to keep mice in line. I’m no expert, but according to Wikipedia, Vikings did bring ancestors of the Norwegian Forest Cats to England.
Either way, Norwegian Forest Cats can be up to 20 pounds … so that’d check out, in my opinion. But who am I to say? I’ve reached out to Ubisoft for more information on England’s chonker cats, but haven’t heard back yet.

Regardless of the breed, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla does let you bring on a cat as a member of your crew — on mice duty, of course. Once you find the little guy, she’ll take up a post on Eivor’s longship. She’s very cute.

This is part of a specific side quest, one that won’t show up on your map. You’ll find the white cat in Norwich, which is part of the East Anglia region. The cat is along one of the roads in the city, so you’ll have to wander around a bit to find her. Once you spot her — it’ll always be the white cat — interact with her and a child will approach, asking to help catch the cat. You’ll need to follow the child and nab the cat. Eventually, you’ll have the option to add her to your crew.
From there, just visit your longship — that’s her home now.
There are plenty more cats in Valhalla’s world, but a particular favorite cat activity I came across is this: I ran into a farmer who complained about a mice problem in his fields. Coincidentally, he has a neighbor who has a load of cats in her home. I convinced the lady to let her cats become mice warriors, and we unleashed them onto the field of mice. It’s a real gorgeous site to watch these large felines pour out of this lady’s house, while Eivor wishes them well on their eternal battle.
(To find this quest, check out the fields behind Grantebridge. You’ll hear a lady yelling “Shoo!” and a farmer complaining about mice.)
