Bungie has delayed the newest Destiny 2 expansion, Beyond Light, to Nov. 10, the developer announced in a blog post Thursday. The studio originally intended to launch the expansion on Sept. 22. Bungie promised more communication on upcoming Beyond Light features in the coming months, and information on how this new plan will impact Season of Arrivals, the game’s current season. Season of Arrivals will now run until Nov. 10.
In its blog post, Bungie blamed the COVID-19 pandemic for the delay, saying, “The past few months have been a challenge and will continue to be during this pandemic. We’ve learned to create together in a new way, by having to work apart from one another. Despite these hurdles, we’re still committed to the same level of quality that our fans expect.”
Destiny 2: Beyond Light is what Bungie refers to as “the first chapter in a new trilogy of expansions,” continuing with The Witch Queen next year and Lightfall after that. Beyond Light is the first expansion to introduce the Destiny Content Vault, which will remove four in-game planets in November. It’s also the first expansion in Destiny history to add a completely new element: Stasis. We currently know very little about this new power set.
It’s unclear how this delay will affect the next-gen versions of Destiny 2, slated for release later this year.
David “Deej” Dague, the head of Destiny’s community team, announced that the studio’s This Week at Bungie blog would appear earlier than normal, and potentially contain more details on the delay. We’ll update this post with any relevant information.
Update: In Bungie’s July 16 “This Week at Bungie” blog post, the studio announced plans to hold the Festival of the Lost, a Halloween-inspired holiday during Season of Arrivals. It will run from Oct. 6 to Nov. 3.
The studio will also extend the Moments of Triumph event to Nov. 10. Bungie plans to hold some additional events during Season of Arrivals, including more Iron Banners.
