Nine months after the studio released its debut game, Disintegration, developer V1 Interactive is shutting down. The studio announced its closure Monday via Twitter, thanking V1 Interactive’s staff and its fans.
On its website, V1 Interactive described itself as a small company, and featured a staff photo with 27 members.
V1 Interactive was founded by Marcus Lehto and was officially unveiled 2016, after striking a deal with Take-Two Interactive’s indie-focused label Private Division. Lehto was a veteran of Halo and Destiny developer Bungie, where he served as art director on the early Halo games and creative director on Halo: Reach. At V1 Interactive, he was president and creative director.
In summer 2019, V1 Interactive announced its first game, Distintegration, a sci-fi first-person shooter with real-time strategy elements. Distintegration boasted a full single-player story campaign and a “huge” multiplayer component. It was released on PlayStation 4, Windows PC, and Xbox One in June 2020 to mixed response. In our hands-on impressions of the game, we said, “Disintegration features some interesting ideas, but never learns how to get out of its own way long enough to let me enjoy them.”
A few months later, V1 Interactive announced that Distintegration’s multiplayer mode would be taken offline.
“While our player base showed interest in the single player campaign, the game unfortunately struggled to build a significant audience necessary for a compelling multiplayer experience,” the developer said. “After weighing options, we have collectively made the decision to sunset the multiplayer support.”
Disintegration went offline in November 2020.
On Twitter, the studio said in its closure announcement:
We are sad to inform you that V1 Interactive is officially closing.
We want to thank all the talented people at V1, both past and present, who helped make the last 5 years wonderful.
And a heartfelt thanks to the amazing community that supported us.
