EA Sports has announced that NHL 21 will launch in October of this year, which breaks the franchise’s September launch tradition. The upcoming hockey sim is slated to launch on PS4 and Xbox One, and if you already know you’re going to pick it up, NHL 21 pre-orders are available now for multiple editions.
While the game has already been announced, NHL 21 will get a full, proper reveal sometime during August–we expect to learn new details about features and improvements made to the sim in the latest entry. In addition to getting an exact release date, we also expect to learn which hockey star will grace the cover. It’s worth noting that the Microsoft Store currently has NHL 21 listed to release on October 16.
EA Sports said that the slight delay was caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, but the studio promised that the game is “feature-complete,” and all that’s left to do is iron out bugs and fine-tune the experience.
While we don’t have much to go on right now, NHL 20 proved to be one of the best entries in the series in years. It earned a 9/10 in GameSpot’s NHL 20 review, so hopefully NHL 21 adds meaningful features and improvements that make the hockey sim even better this time around.
We do know that NHL 21 won’t get a next-gen release on PS5 and Xbox Series X. That’s a departure from other upcoming EA Sports titles like Madden NFL 21 and FIFA 21. However, it will be backward-compatible on PS5 and Xbox Series X. EA Sports will address “plans for the next-gen consoles” at the official reveal, so it’s possible that performance will at least be improved if playing on PS5 or Xbox Series X.
Even though we are limited on NHL 21 details, we know three different editions will be available at launch on PS4 and Xbox One. You can also get some goodies for Ultimate Team if you pre-order any edition of the game.
