NHL 21 launches in just a couple of weeks, breaking the franchise’s streak of September releases. This might disappoint players who were hoping to get their annual hockey fix next month but if you already know you’re going to pick it up on PS4 or Xbox One, NHL 21 preorders are available now for multiple editions ahead of its October 16 release date.
NHL 21’s cover athlete is Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin. One of the best players in hockey, Ovechkin previously appeared on the cover of NHL 07. EA has outlined a handful of changes for the gameplay and modes. The Be A Pro story mode will have more storylines and a streamlined menu system. The World of Chel mode will feature ranked seasons along with a free skate and practice mode. On the gameplay side of things, EA has added more skill moves to give players more versatility.
While we still don’t have a ton of information to go on, the series’ previous entry, NHL 20, proved to be one of the best entries in the series in years. It earned a 9/10 in GameSpot’s NHL 20 review, so hopefully NHL 21 will prove to be a meaningful improvement on an already great hockey sim.
We do know that NHL 21 won’t get a next-gen release on PS5 and Xbox Series X. That’s a departure from other upcoming EA Sports titles like Madden NFL 21 and FIFA 21. However, it will be backward-compatible on PS5 and Xbox Series X.
Three different editions will be available at launch on PS4 and Xbox One. You can also get some goodies for Ultimate Team if you preorder any edition of the game.

NHL 21’s $60 standard edition is available to preorder in physical and digital formats, and you’ll get two bonuses with your preorder: two Ultimate Team Diamond Player Choice Packs (one per month for two months) and one Unlocked Hockey Bag (filled with cosmetics).

NHL 21’s Deluxe edition costs $80. While we imagine it will be available in physical and digital formats, it’s only available to preorder digitally right now. It comes with the following bonuses:
