Remember those painful few weeks near the start of 2020 when it was impossible to find a roll of toilet paper anywhere? Good times. As it turns out, though, more people this year have searched “where to buy PS5” than they did “where to buy toilet paper,” which makes sense, as Sony’s new console is still hard to buy as of this writing. So Google tells us in its end-of-year post, which details the most-searched terms of the year.
Fun fact: More people are searching for how to buy a PlayStation 5 than they are the Xbox Series X, but both consoles still crack the top five, which is rounded out by toilet paper, face masks, and hand sanitizer.
Also curious, though perhaps not surprising, is Google’s list of most-searched games for 2020. In order, the top 10 are:
- Among Us
- Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout
- Valorant
- Genshin Impact
- Ghost of Tsushima
- Animal Crossing
- Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla
- The Last of Us 2
- Madden NFL 2021
- Jackbox
I am somewhat shocked that Animal Crossing: New Horizons didn’t crack the top five, but then again, the Nintendo Switch was also hard to secure for a while this year — whereas games like Among Us and Fall Guys were available for free, if you played on mobile or had PlayStation Plus, respectively. Jackbox, meanwhile, makes a good showing because it’s a great party game that you can enjoy over Zoom, something that is crucial during a time when everyone has to socially distance.
The full post is worth a look, as you can see what people cared about the most in 2020. For example, Parasite and Black Panther were two of the most-searched movies of the year, while Tiger King and The Queen’s Gambit are some of the most-searched TV shows. No wonder everyone I know is trying to learn chess right now!
