A new, unannounced Star Wars game titled Star Wars: Squadrons appears to have leaked through a piece of artwork posted on Xbox.com on Friday, seemingly ahead of an official announcement from publisher Electronic Arts.
The artwork shows a Rebel pilot and an Imperial TIE Fighter pilot standing back to back, and a series of starfighters (X-Wing, A-Wing, Y-Wing, TIE Fighter, TIE Bomber, TIE Reaper) about to clash. The Xbox website also displays the tagline “Pilots wanted” and includes a pre-order button that points to a broken link. No other details about the game were visible.
The project may be the final title of the game that leaked through the PlayStation Store in March: Star Wars: Project Maverick. Like Squadrons, Project Maverick featured artwork that implied starship battles between original trilogy Empire and Rebellion forces. The project is rumored to be the next title from EA’s Motive Studio, and is reportedly a “smaller, more unusual project” from the studio formerly headed by Jade Raymond, who has since moved on to Google.
Electronic Arts is holding a digital event on June 18 called EA Play Live which promises “world premieres, news and more.”
