Wreckfest trailer shows off PS5 version, which is a $9.99 upgrade

On Wednesday, Sony announced that PlayStation Plus’ free games lineup for May would carry the PlayStation 4 version of Wreckfest — but only for PlayStation 5 owners. A trailer for the game on Thursday explains, obliquely, why that’s the case: When the demolition derby sim’s PS5 version launches on June 1, those who own the game on PS4 can upgrade to it for $9.99.

THQ Nordic announced both the upgraded version and the price back at the end of March. (The PS5 version of the game, by itself, is $39.99.) So the PS Plus offer looks like a deal between the publisher and PlayStation, especially as there’s no word yet on a similar upgraded edition for Xbox One to Xbox Series X.

Wreckfest’s Xbox One version was patched in mid-March to support 60 frames per second performance in 4K resolution on Xbox Series X. The game is included with an Xbox Game Pass subscription.

Thursday’s trailer for Wreckfest on PS5 said that version will get 60 fps and 4K resolution, too, as well as faster loading times and the haptic support of the console’s new DualSense controller. Multiplayer will support up to 24 competitors, too.

The graphical improvements will include dynamic dirt getting the vehicles muddy; “new visual effects for skidmarks”; more foliage, shadows, and environmental lighting; and, of course, god rays.

First released in 2018 on Windows PC, Bugbear Entertainment’s Wreckfest is a standout among the recent surge of motorsports video games on consoles. A mid-March update on all platforms added a new racing tournament, a new car, a new course layout for one of the game’s existing tracks, and the return of exploding barrels in the title’s slalom events, as if Wreckfest needed more means of spectacular, instantaneous destruction.
