It’s now official, Facebook has announced the Oculus Quest 2 all-in-one virtual reality (VR) headset. It might be a little of an anticlimax due to all the leaks but pre-orders are now live, it’ll be an October launch, and there will be two editions starting from £299 GBP.
After almost 18 months on sale the Oculus Quest’s time is now over, about to be superseded by a smaller, lighter, more powerful headset which is also going to be cheaper. The Oculus Quest 2 will come in a 64GB model for £299/$299 and a 256GB model for £399/$399, with pre-orders starting today. The launch will take place on 13th October with the headset available in 22 countries including Japanese retail stores for the first time.
Confirming those leaks, the Oculus Quest 2 will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 platform with 6GB RAM. The display is a fast-switch LCD with 50% more pixels than before, offering a resolution of 1832×1920 per eye. Plus the refresh rate will be 72Hz at launch followed by 90Hz support in the future.
When it comes to videogames its compatible with all of Oculus Quest’s library, they’ll just look better. It will of course be compatible with Oculus Link so those with a PC can play high-end titles like Stormland or Asgard’s Wrath. There will also be a bunch of new titles coming at launch in October and by the end of the year.
When it comes to adjustment and fit Oculus Quest 2 features an elasticated soft strap to quickly tighten or loosen for various head sizes. As for the interpupillary adjustment, the new headset has a new mechanism where you move the lenses between three settings, 58, 63 and 68mm, each indicated by a 1,2 or 3 on a central panel. The weight has also been reduced from Oculus Quest’s 571g down to 503g.
The Oculus Touch controllers have also been reworked for better ergonomics with a faceplate very similar to the original Oculus Rift controller.
