PUBG Shifts Esports Plans to Online-Only Regional Events

Esports live events for PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS (PUBG) have been canceled for the year, and will be replaced by a multi-region online competition series. PUBG Corp., the developer of the battle royale game, made the decision in response to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic

The PUBG Continental Series (PCS) will consist of three events in May, June, and August with a total prize pool fund of $2.4M USD across four regions: Asia, Asia-Pacific, Europe, and North America. The first event will be a charity showdown, where each region winner can choose a charity for PUBG Corp. to donate $100K to. The May and August events will see the return of the “Pick’Em Challenge” and in-game items, designed to provide additional revenue to competitors.

The original 2020 plan for PUBG esports was to have three roadshow tournaments, in place of last year’s multi-regional league model. The 21 teams that qualified for the first of these canceled events (in Berlin) will receive $20K in compensation.
