The never-ending subject of Skill-Based Matchmaking (SBMM) is back in full force. One of the most controversial topics in gaming, this feature is now a mainstay in most multiplayer shooters. Much to the dismay of various communities, many players have been trying a plethora of different methods to avoid it. However, most titles don’t really offer a way to avoid SBMM. Call of Duty: Warzone, on the other hand, seemingly offers a couple of different ways to do so. Although, the most recent way is to use Call of Duty‘s Companion App.
Warzone players using the Companion App to their advantage
The Companion App launched last year and essentially is a way to see your stats in Call of Duty. The app also features ways to look at your friends’ stats, your achievements, recent matches, etc. Up until now, it wasn’t too popular as you can see most of its information in the actual game itself.
However, Warzone players thought of a way to use the app to their benefit. In the Companion App, you can view your recent matches and thus, see your enemies and their stats. In Warzone though, you’re able to view the lobby you’re currently in and see the kill/death ratios of every player. You can also see the combined KDR of the entire lobby.
As @JaredFPS explains above, the app is a huge exploit when it comes to the competitive scene of Warzone. If a team or player is in a tournament, they can use the app to see the combined KDR of their current lobby. If they feel it’s too high for their liking, they can back out and keep getting into matches until they find one that has a low combined KDR.
However, in terms of non-competitive play, casual players can use the Companion App to avoid SBMM and cheaters. After all, this is a tool that Activision itself implemented, so there’s certainly no reason to not take advantage of it. Of course, the narrative of this tool is slightly different when talking about tournaments and real money on the line.
There’s no word from Activision on whether or not something will be done about this exploit.
