Pokemon Go Genesect Guide: Raid Tips, Best Counters, Weaknesses, And More

Pokemon Go’s third and final Ultra Unlock event of the summer, Unova Week, is now underway, and as part of the festivities, the Mythical Pokemon Genesect is returning to the game. The Paleozoic Pokemon will appear in five-star Raids throughout Unova Week, and you’ll even have a chance to catch a Shiny Genesect. If you’re hoping to add the Mythical Pokemon to your collection, we’ve rounded up some tips that will help you battle and catch Genesect below.

Genesect Raid Hours

Genesect will appear in five-star Raids throughout Unova Week, which runs from August 14 until 1 PM PT / 4 PM ET on August 21. This marks the first time the Mythical Pokemon will be available in standard Raids; previously, the only way to encounter it (if you missed its Special Research story event) was in EX Raids, which require an invitation to join.

Since standard Raids occur periodically, there’s no telling when a Genesect Raid will take place. However, you’ll receive an in-game notification when a Raid at a nearby Gym is about to begin, so you shouldn’t have much trouble tracking a Genesect Raid down. As previously mentioned, there’s also a chance the Mythical Pokemon could be Shiny, although you won’t be able to tell until you defeat it and get to the catching phase.

Genesect Weaknesses And Counters

Much like Scizor, Genesect is a Bug/Steel Pokemon. This typing helps mitigate many of the weaknesses Bug and Steel types typically have, but it also makes the Mythical Pokemon extremely vulnerable to Fire types, so you’ll want to bring along plenty of those when challenging Genesect. Fire-type Legendaries like Reshiram, Entei, and Moltres will be especially effective if you have those, but other Fire Pokemon like Chandelure, Darmanitan, and Charizard will also be helpful.

Pokemon To Avoid

Although Psychic Pokemon are normally pretty powerful, they’re at a disadvantage against Genesect. Not only do they take super-effective damage from Genesect’s Bug-type moves, but their Psychic-type attacks are not very effective against the Mythical Pokemon thanks to its Steel typing. Fairy Pokemon also take super-effective damage from Steel moves, making them another type to avoid when challenging Genesect.
