Pokémon Go gets a global event for franchise’s 25th anniversary

Niantic and The Pokémon Company are holding a special event in Pokémon Go in February for Pokémon’s 25th anniversary. It’s called Pokémon Go Tour: Kanto and, like this summer’s Go Fest, will be a global, virtual ticketed event designed to celebrate the original Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green.

In fact, tickets for February’s Pokémon Go Tour: Kanto event will come in Red and Green options, with each ticket type offering access to exclusive groups of Pokémon. One of the major draws of the event will be access to shiny Pokémon — all 150 original Kanto Pokémon will be available as shiny that day (some for the first time), and an event-exclusive Special Research line will let ticket holders discovery shiny Mew.

Pokémon Go Tour: Kanto will take place on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2021, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. local time. Tickets are available for purchase in Pokémon Go now, and cost $11.99. Players who purchase a Tour ticket by Jan. 13 will also get free access to special research story lines for January and February’s Community Days, each of which costs $0.99 separately.

Niantic says that players can buy their tickets now, then choose which color ticket they want to play with closer to the event. Here’s what each ticket type will offer:

Red Version

  • Red Version–exclusive Pokémon: Ekans, Oddish, Mankey, Growlithe, Scyther, and Electabuzz will be attracted to Incense
  • Increased chance of encountering these Shiny Pokémon: Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Pidgey, Ekans, Pikachu, Nidoran ♀, Oddish, Diglett, Mankey, Growlithe, Ponyta, Shellder, Drowzee, Krabby, Hitmonlee, Lickitung, Scyther, Electabuzz, Eevee, Kabuto, and Dratini

Green Version

  • Green Version–exclusive Pokémon: Sandshrew, Vulpix, Meowth, Bellsprout, Magmar, and Pinsir will be attracted to Incense
  • Increased chance of encountering these Shiny Pokémon: Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Pidgey, Pikachu, Sandshrew, Nidoran ♂, Vulpix, Meowth, Psyduck, Bellsprout, Geodude, Exeggcute, Hitmonchan, Koffing, Tangela, Horsea, Magmar, Pinsir, Eevee, Omanyte, and Dratini

Pokémon Go Tour: Kanto ticket holders will see all Pokémon from the Kanto region appearing in the wild, in raids, and in encounters after research tasks. Players will be able to track their Kanto-region catches from the Today View in Pokémon Go. Depending on the ticket, players will be more likely to encounter certain shiny Pokémon in the wild.

Ticket holders will also get access to an event-exclusive Special Research story which promises “an encounter with a special Pokémon.” Certain Pokémon caught during Pokémon Go Tour: Kanto will have exclusive attacks (e.g. Venusaur evolved from Ivysaur or caught during the event will know Frenzy Plant, Articuno caught during the event will know Hurricane).

But players who don’t purchase tickets will also see some changes during the event period. For all players, Niantic says that “some” Kanto-region Pokémon will be appearing in the wild and in raids, with Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, and Mewtwo returning to Legendary raids. All players will be able to access event-exclusive Timed Research and trade range will be boosted to 40 km.
