Animal Crossing: New Horizons has taken the trend of DIY to a whole different level by implementing being able to build your own tools and furniture. It also ties into the games idea of self sufficiency by allowing you to create furniture for your home. However, since it is a major part of the game, it can get overwhelming. Here are some guidelines that will keep it simple for you.
Always Keep Backups Of Those Flimsy Tools
Those cheap axes and fishing rods you get from Tom Nook at the beginning of the game will eventually be able to be upgraded to ones that are far more durable. For this, you’ll need those flimsy tools as an ingredient, and while the stronger ones do last longer, they will eventually break after a certain number of uses. This is why it’s a good idea to keep extra cheap axes and shovels on hand, so that if you need to rebuild something, it won’t take as long as finding materials to actually build those flimsy tools to use in recipes. That way, when your fishing rod breaks during a fishing competition, you’re just minutes away from a fix.
Hoard Any And All Material
As you delve deeper into the game and get more experience making things for your town, the material requirement will become more intense. This is why it’s important when you are at the beginning of the game that you stockpile things, like clay that you find under rocks. Even though you will not need clay for a while, it will be commonly used when you begin to make infrastructures for the island, and material typically respawns only once a day. Not to mention what you find under rocks can be random. Basically, you never know whether you’ll find seven irons there or none at all. So, even when you have no use for something you come across, save it because you’ll most likely need it later.
Plant Lots Of Those Fruit Trees
Everything and anything you find in the game can be used as material for a building project at some point, even the trash you fish out of the sea! If you find two boots, you can recycle them to make a new pair of shoes. The islands fruit can be used to make themed chairs, tables and such, so it’s important when you visit other islands that you bring back fruit trees there that your town doesn’t have. When you get the Nooks Cranny shop, they will have a hot item of the day that is selling for much more than its usually worth. Therefore, if you have the material for the item readily available, you can make it in mass quantities for some quick bells.
Chat Up Your Neighbors
The residents in the community love to craft things as much as you do, and often times if you drop by their home, you can catch them in the middle of a project. Depending on if you’re friendly with them, they will gladly share the recipe with you. Sometimes you’ll even get one as a gift if you give them something first! DIY recipes can also be found in those balloons in the sky, and even by picking up random items around the island.
The DIY component may seem overwhelming at first, but if you follow these guidelines, it will surely be a breeze. Just make sure to stockpile material and always have extras of things on hand.
