Animal Crossing: New Horizons – How To Spot A Fake Painting

Our favorite crazy art dealer is back in action. You can now play with Crazy Redd in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. In the latest update, you can expand your museum to include an art exhibit!

How to Find Crazy Redd

Crazy Redd lives up to his former reputation, as even Isabelle is wary of his art dealings. If you have the latest update installed, you can unlock Redd over a series of days after talking to Blathers in the museum. As long as you’ve been donating bugs, fish, and fossils to Blathers, he will mention he wants to open an art exhibit. The next day, Isabelle will tell you a suspicious character has arrived. Redd will sell you a painting, you’ll donate it to Blathers, and the rest is history.

Where to Buy Redd’s Art

Once the art exhibit is set up and you want to buy artwork from Redd, you can catch him at his boat, where he will offer you various art pieces and furniture. You’ll be limited to one purchase per day and you’ll need to be wary. Former players know that some (if not all) of Redd’s art is a forgery. So, how do you spot a fake painting?

How to Know Which Paintings are Fake

Prepare for the lighting on Crazy Redd’s boat to be sub-par. However, Redd will let you examine the artwork before you purchase it. It’s your time to shine.

Fake paintings will often have something about them that’s a little bit off. From a coffee stain to a hat missing, these small details will become huge red flags. Redd’s art is based on real paintings, so you can often compare the paintings to the real thing and play a spot-the-difference game. Make sure you guess correctly, though, or you could face major consequences. It’s also important to note that returning pieces from previous Animal Crossing games, such as the Wistful painting, will not be the same. This means that your spot-the-difference game was just kicked up a notch, as the differences will be… well, different.

An example of a difference would be “The Amazing Painting.” In the fake Amazing Painting, a hat is removed from the black figure in the center of the painting. However, in the real version of the painting, the black figure is seen in the center of the work wearing a hat.

According to Acadiaa on Reddit, here is a guide to every piece of art you can purchase from Redd, and which pieces have fake versions:

The importance of getting a real painting should not be ignored. If you take a fake painting to Blathers, he will not accept it. Plus, you can only purchase one item from Crazy Redd a day, so you need to make it a good one. However, everyone on your island can buy one painting or artwork from Redd a day, so you could then clear out his stock. It’s important to keep in mind that in previous games like New Leaf, Redd sold one real painting a day and the rest were fakes. Good luck!
